discuss about Meng Keo Pich Chinda. When they say you can’t forecast the future, it is true. Nobody can tell what will happen in a next second of your life. In 1988 when the two young girls Meng Keo Pich Chinda (Pichata) and Touch Srey Nich (Sonich) went on stage captivated everybody’s heart with a song called Some Puk Vil Vinh (Please Come Back, Father), did you know one of these girls would be rich and famous living like a queen and the other is confined to a wheelchair for all her life? Observing both girls growing up through their personal and career life, we can see Meng Keo Pich Chinda and Touch Srey Nich were neck and neck with each other since they started. They both seemed to progress at about the same rate, and they were approximately on the same level in terms of popularity and reputation. Even their performing and signing styles are also similar. This was seen that way, until Touch Srey Nich unfortunately got shot on Tuesday 21 of October 2003, Meng Keo Pich Chinda’s popularity went shooting like a rocket making her the only Khmer entertainment queen. Over the last several years, Meng Keo Pich Chinda had risen above and beyond any female vocalist in Cambodia during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Meng Keo Pich Chinda was born in 1976 (during Khmer Rouge time). Her mother is Songva Pich who was a famous Ayay singer in the 1970s. Her father’s name is Meng Hun. He was a very famous musician and a Khmer traditional music professor at Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh. Both of her parents passed away. Her mother Sonva Pich died during the Khmer Rouge time. According to her interview with a local magazine, her mother died perhaps in 1978 when Meng Keo Pich Chinda was only 2 years old. She was told by her sister that her mother died when she was pregnant. Her mother was forced to work in the farms and tortured until she had miscarriage and died. Her father died in 1995 of heart disease and hypertension. As a music professor, her father had many students who are now a career musician. One of them is her brother. She has an elder sister named Meng Ratthana who is also a singer and actress.
During her interview with Yok Chinda of CTN for Channel 21, her father did not know that Meng Keo Pich Chinda could sing at first, and he found out by surprise one day. Her father owned a Khmer traditional music band and was hired to perform for wedding ceremonies. As a young girl, she always went together with her father whenever his band was hired to perform. Every time she went with her father to a wedding, she observed how his female singers sang and performed and she tried to learn. One day, a female singer did not show up for the wedding ceremony. Her father was frantic to look for a female singer to replace his no show singer because the wedding event was going to start. One of the musicians in the band was her brother who knew she could sing pointed to her. Her father was skeptical at first as she was just a little girl but he had no choice so he decided to let her sing. Meng Keo Pich Chinda said once she started the first part of the song, everybody was surprised by her voice and came to look for the singer. They were amazed when they saw a little girl who could barely hold a microphone sang that well. From that point on, her father knew that he could count on her when his female singer did not show up.
Meng Keo Pich Chinda’s voice is very fine and soothing. She can sing for almost all kinds of music, but her voice is better fit for traditional music type of song than modern and English songs. The key element of Meng Keo Pich Chinda’s success is not so much about her voice but her ability to engage with her audience. Meng Keo Pich Chinda has a unique and special skill to interact with her audience either through her songs, emotions or words in every moment she has a chance. If it is a happy song, she’ll get the audience to sing and dance with her and if it is a sad song, she’ll get the audience to cry with her. Her choreography is also fluid and lovely. That is her natural talent when it comes to performing arts. Meng Keo Pich Chinda is not only a great singer, but she is also a fashion designer. She designs most of her dresses herself. At home, she has a few assistants to help her with her tailoring and fashion design work for her shows and recordings.
For her personality, Meng Keo Pich Chinda always presents herself as a Khmer girl though there was a period of time when she was seen to pick up some of Thai influences. When she talks especially when she is on stage, she is always very formal, soft and polite. She would use each word very carefully. Since now she is married and has a child, Meng Keo Pich Chinda always portrays herself as a mother and wife. Meng Keo Pich Chinda has contributed some of her time and money to help out the less fortunate such as orphans and elderly. Part of her trip to Australia last year was also for her charity efforts to help orphanages in Australia and Cambodia.

Meng Pich Chinda and Moueng Rathanak Kim, her son

It is obvious that she has recorded thousands of song now. Meng Keo Pich Chinda sings and records for almost every music production company including her own production. There are no statistics available but perhaps she has recorded the most songs among her peers. This would also include songs she recorded for Reaksmey Hang Meas Production. She was the only guest female singer - not a Reaksmey Hang Meas Production’s employee was in Best of the Best shows. She appeared in almost big concerts in Cambodia, including some royal and national events and ceremonies. When asked why she is not seen acting for any big scale movie, her answer was singing was more profitable and easier for her. She said acting for a movie required more time and efforts but for singing she could get pay per song and most of the time she only had to do it in a studio. A few years ago, I talked to Mai Sameth, the owner of SM Production he said he had to pay Meng Keo Pich Chinda $100USD per song. So you can estimate how much money she had made from her recording and her live performances through out these years. Definitely, Meng Keo Pich Chinda is a very rich celebrity in Cambodia today.
For her private life, Meng Keo Pich Chinda is not exempt from being a human like everybody else except she is smart enough to always get out of troubles once she knows it. There were other rumors and speculations in the past but what seemed to be significant was her past relationship with Oknha Por Sam Ouen in early 2000s. Everybody knew about it as it was on every Khmer local magazine and newspaper headline at the time. People especially followed her relationship with Oknha Por Sam Ouen because Oknha Por Sam Ouen was married and Meng Keo Pich Chinda’s relatives were not happy. The relationship went sour after about 3 years living together in Phnom Penh. Speculations and rumors about the break up spread around Khmer communities over the world. Some said Oknha Por Sam Ouen went back to his wife. Some said Oknha Por Sam Ouen was having a relationship with another Khmer movie star. According to a news article released by Reasmey Kampuchea in 2003, Oknha Por Sam Ouen never acknowledged that Meng Keo Pich Chinda was his wife as they did not get married and had no marriage certificate. That was clearly a big lesson learned for Meng Keo Pich Chinda at the time. She did not release any information about her breaking up with Oknha Por Sam Ouen, and she was able to move on with her life in a very short time.
There was not much information about her private life after she broke up with Oknha Por Sam Ouen but she was seen mainly focusing on her music and song productions without getting distracted by the media about her past relationship issue. Until a couple years later, she found her new love - Moueng Kim and she decided to mend her heart by marrying him. Her past experience had taught her well. So she did not repeat her old mistake again. She got married on January 1, 2005 and this time she had a marriage certificate. Moueng Kim is a high ranking and powerful official of the Police of Interior Department. Meng Keo Pich Chinda is rich and talented. So when they are together, they are one of a very few highly recognizable celebrity couples in Cambodia. This reflected how smart she is when it comes to her life management. Her wedding only brought her more happiness and prosperity.
Meng Keo Pich Chinda is a very detail oriented person. She would plan out her life event years ahead and she always has a reason for everything she does or says. Her statement is always followed by the word “because….” Right after her marriage, she told the media that she wanted to have three children and she even told them which year she would have the first, second and third child. The reason was her doctor told her that it was ideal to have children when she was young. Meng Keo Pich Chinda also said though she had no control on it, she preferred to have a girl for her second child. After less than a year from her wedding day, Meng Keo Pich Chinda had her first child – a boy. He was born on October 25, 2005 in Australia and his name is Moueng Rathanak Kim and yes she explained that Moueng Rathanak Kim meant a big piece of Moueng Kim’s diamond. Recently, she has told local magazines that it is now time for her to have another baby, and that she has been trying very hard as her husband and her seem to be very busy and they don’t meet each other very much.
Meng Keo Pich Chinda went to Canada, France, USA and Australia many times to perform and visit. She stayed in Australia during her pregnancy with her relative for several months. The last time she went to Australia was in 2007 with her husband, son, mother-in-law and other stars such as Meng Bunlo, Chea Vanna, etc. She came back with a big smile on her face on June 21, 2007. Meng Keo Pich Chinda is a very well-known artist both in the country and overseas. There is no one Cambodian who does not know Meng Keo Pich Chinda these days. Her success has promoted her to the top of the Khmer star community among many other singers from her generation. It is obvious that all these successes she has accumulated one after another since the day she sang her first song for her father did not come easily. They were well planned and achieved and this reflected her great talents, intelligence, commitments and determination. One can easily tell that she is very proud of what she has done so far for both her public and private lives.
Today she lives with her son and husband at their mansion in Rusey Village, Stung Mean Chay District, Mean Chay Section, Phnom Penh. Looking at the two music videos below again, you would see the two innocent young girls who did not know much about what would happen to their life at the time were trying to do their best to show their skills and talents to the world. Even they themselves wouldn’t know what would happen to them. Therefore, nobody can tell the future. While we know that we can’t predict the future, we can always wish Meng Keo Pich Chinda to continue to prosper and live happily thereafter with her family and wish Touch Srey Nich the best of luck in her rehabilitation and hope that one day she’ll be able to sing and entertain Cambodian people again.
