to discuss about Ouen Sreymom. Every newspaper, magazine and Khmer Internet community in the world including Angkorthom.US had their news headline when the news broke about Ouen Sreymom and her husband Keo Sokha were in a process of filing a divorce. A few days later, she confirmed with major Khmer magazines that she and her husband were truly filing court paper for a divorce but did not want to provide detailed information about what the reason was. Ouen Sreymom said she would let the public know once the divorce was finalized. According to her friends and unverified sources, Ouen Sreymom had been going back to sing for Reymeas Production and that she was going to perform in France some time in May 2008. However, a news article released by a Khmer magazine in January 2008 said she was still in Battambang and had not resumed any work with any music production companies and was not going to perform in any country yet as her court process had not been completed. Because there was no reason provided from both her and her husband, people speculated different reasons. Some said Ouen Sreymom was having someone behind her and that was why she wanted to a divorce. Some others said her husband was blamed for the reason they did not have children for the last 10 years. In the same article Ouen Sreymom denied both speculations but still did not issue any detailed statement except she said this was built up for many years but she was trying to cover it because living as celebrity she did not want public to see this happening but now she could not hold on to it any longer.

There is more and more information that it was Ouen Sreymom who filed for the divorce – not her husband. According to some of his friends, Koe Sokha did not want a divorce. He told his friends that he
was trying to reconcile with Ouen Sreymom many times but she refused. The same magazine article said he did not show up in court and was not willing to sign the court paper. Ouen Sreymom on the other hand wanted the process to be expedited. Very recently another article was released by another major Khmer magazine said Keo Sokha told them that the reason was in fact another person got in between them. Ouen Srey Mom was having someone behind her since she came back from Australia. He told the magazine that there was someone from USA, very rich and handsome who would call his wife and spent hours talking with her on the phone at 3 or 4 am in the morning. One day, she told him that that person wanted her to stop singing at Tonle Sap restaurant as the person would support her financially. Also Ouen Sreymom said that person wanted to buy a top Mercedez car for him. Koe Sokha always told his wife to always try to make a living on their own and not to rely on someone else but she was then upset. So far Ouen Sreymom has not released any statement to counter what Keo Sokha had said. It is important for fans not to jump into a conclusion until you hear from both sides.
Ouen sreymom and her husband were married in Batt dombong.
Most Cambodians live in Cambodia or oversea know Oeun Sreymom (Srey Mom). Oeun Sreymom was born in 1979 in Snong Village, Battambang Province, Cambodia. She is one of the top singers in Cambodia at the present time. She appears in many Khmer music DVDs such as Ankorwat, Bopha, Five Stars, Reay Meas, Preah Vihear just to mention a few.
She is also seen in many TV concerts such as CTN or some local TV station programs. I have not seen her in a Khmer movie so far like some popular Khmer singers who are also a movie star. She is known to be a friendly and easy going person. Though I personally classify her voice as typical, Oeun Sreymom possesses a very strong and pretty voice. Many people say she sings openly. Some of her songs are sung with accent of a certain Cambodian groups living in various parts of Cambodia such as Khmer Sorin, which is very popular to some Cambodian fans. There are also songs that she sings without accent. Though she is seen to speak with accent sometimes, especially when she is asked to speak that way, she does not seem to have any real accent when she converses with others.
Part of the CTN channel 21 Star Interview program, she sang the song Chrus Peach Chinda which is a Khmer classic song that is still popular among Cambodians. When asked why she sang this song, she said, “because this was the song I sang in the singing contest in Battambang.” This was the singing contest that she participated in her home town province, Battambang and got 2nd place. She was 17 at the time. She participated in Battambang singing contest with other songs like On Chea ReyMeas. She studied at Wat Poknong Elementary School and then Sala Sour Hour. She got promoted to the 7th grade when she had to leave school to help her family to make a living. Oeun Sreymom was first introduced by her to-be husband to the Pay Lin restaurant owner in Battambang and got a job as a singer there. She sang and also helped her father in the same time. Then, she got married the man who helped her get a job at Pay Lin restaurant a year later. She lives in Battambang behind the Battambang Hospital, Wat Leap Village. Sor Samourn, her father is a movie voice artist and her mother is Thi Ly, home maker. During the interview by CTN, her father said he always advised her to be gentle, good and humble. She has four other sisters and a youngest brother who still live her parents in Battambang. Oeun Sreymom went through a lot of hardships and ordeals. As the eldest daughter of the family, she had to work hard after school to help fund the family while her father was away. She said she used to sell water, pick plastic bags, cleaned and sold them to those sell vegetable and sell other stuff.
When the CTN Anchor Ung Ratha asked her about her signing skills, she responded she had no singing lessons or someone to help her develop her skills. It is all her talent – self trained singer. When asked why she came to Phnom Penh, she replied that her father encouraged her to come to Phom Penh with her husband to seek better opportunity. I had no relatives in Phnom Penh, but her husband knows a friend. In 2001, she came to Phnom Penh without knowing anything about the City. She rented a room for $25. Oeun Sreymom and her would ride her old motor cycle each day from place to place in the unfamiliar City and asked restaurant owners if they would hire her and her husband to sing for their restaurant. She spent almost half of the month to look for a place to sing. Tonle Sab Restaurant owner offered her a job there as a singer with her husband. She then got help from Long Bunna who was also a singer at Tenle Sab restaurant to get connected with Lok Sadara who was looking for someone who sings with accent for Five Stars Production. She was tested and then accepted to work for Five Stars Production and then other music video companies. It took her by surprise when the song Ao Stmey Pak Menchouy Dos got a big hit in the US. She said that she became well known oversea before people began to recognize her locally. She then went to France 2002 and Australia 2003, France 2004 again and then the US recently. Now, she owns a home in Phnom Pench. With the money she earned from oversea, she also built a home for her family Wat Leap village. She has a plan to own a restaurant and beauty salon before thinking about having children.

People admire her in the fact that she has managed to be famous really fast in a short period of time. She went through hardships when she was young and now she is working hard to keep up her re(edited)tion. It is really her strong determination and persistence. I am personally one of her fans and it was surprised to hear that her family is in Wat Leap Village where I used to live. Angkorthom.US wishes Oeun Sreymom the best of luck in her career endeavor.
