discuss about Ampor Tevy. For those who watched Khmer movies in early 1990s, you most likely saw a film stared by Ampor Tevy (Om Por Tevy). It is hard to miss her movies as she acted for more than 100 movies at the time and hundreds of Karaoke songs for many different music production companies afterward. Everybody especially men thought Ampor Tevy was very beautiful and talented actress among a few other leading stars at the time such as Sok Sreymom, Oum Savaney, Keo Kolayan, Piset Pilika, etc. She first emerged in a movie called Sne Hiek Chiek Vihnean with Sam Vityea. After Sam Vityea passed away, Ampor Tevey was then seen paired up with the legacy and respectable Khmer actor Tep Rindaro in many movies and Karaoke songs. She continued to gain her popularity with each new movie released until she earned her title as a super star in the Khmer film industry in 1990s.

Ampor Tevy was born in 1970. She is the eldest child in the family among other 5 siblings. She finished 12 Grade at Bak Touk College of Fine Arts in 1989. She then got married with Pich Pirun who was also an actor from her generation in 1992. Ampor Tevy has a son named Pirun Indreaboth who is now 9 years old and a daughter named Pirun Leakesey Tevy. After marriage, she continued to act for more movies mostly with her co-star Tep Rindaro. Remarkably, her popularity went from just a regular movie star to a movie super star in just a few years. Every new movie released locally and overseas Ampor Tevy was part of it, and she was always the main character of the movie or music video. Everybody began to know her mostly as a playful and pretty young girl. Her husband on the other hand was seen less and less in movies and music videos after marriage and he disappeared all together. He then quit acting for his new career which he still is today a celebrity fashion designer.
Unfortunately, Cambodia was not completely peaceful in early 1990s. Wars were still going on in some places in the country. Over all Cambodian population were still very poor and needy so Khmer entertainment productions and performing arts were not in Cambodians’ mind at the time. Khmer movies were mostly sold overseas to few Cambodians who fled the country in early 1980s. Khmer cinematography and film productions were very primitive. Movies and music videos were created by regular home camcorders and recorded in VHS tapes with no or little special effects. So, Khmer movie productions were not sophisticated enough to compete with foreign movies from Thailand, India and Hong Kong. Local Cambodians would watch Thai, Indian or Chinese movies rather than Khmer movies. Only Cambodians who lived overseas watched Khmer movies or music videos because they missed Cambodia and that was the only way they could see Cambodia. That had adversely affected local Khmer film productions dramatically that most of Khmer movie production companies had to go out of business or stopped producing movies.
Despite of her popularity, Ampor Tevy had very few opportunities to act and began to lose her concertration. In 2001 Fai Sam Ang, the predominant movie director decided to create the first full-scale movie based on a well-known Khmer folktale story: Kon Pous Keng Kang (the Snake King’s Child) which was made into a movie in 1960s and played by Dy Saveth. Ampor Tevy was selected to act as Neang Ni, the main female character of the movie together with Tep Rindaro, Pich Chan Boromey and Winai Kraibutr a Thai leading actor was also part of the movie. Though this was a joint venture with a Thai movie production company, the movie was recognized as the first full-scale Cambodian movie ever made since the Khmer Rouge time. At the time, Phnom Penh did not have viable commercial theathers, so the movie was showed at the French Cultural Center in Phnom Penh and other outdoor settings. The movie was then recorded in CVDs for the first time. After acting in Kon Pous Keng Kang movie, Ampor Tevy decided to leave Cambodia for USA, seeking for a better opportunity. Kon Pous King Kang was her last movie of her career.
Ampor Tevy left her husband and her son in Cambodia behind to explore her new life in USA. There were rumors that her husband and her were divorced during the time she was in USA, but recently in every news article released about her she said it was not a divorce. In her interview on Ratrey Kamsan of CTN, she said in front of her husband that it was an agreement between her and her husband to seek a better opportunity for her family’s future. In early 2000s, there were a few other Khmer female movie stars who left the country to live in USA such as Oum Savanney, Sok Sreymom and some of them had a divorce. While she was in USA, Ampor Tevy completely disappeared from Khmer entertainment. There were rumors that she had to work just like everybody else. Ampor Tevy always took the time to go back to Cambodia and visited her husband and son. It was a surprise to Khmer communities through out the world when Ampor Tevy and Pich Pirun recently said they have a daughter as there was no information about Ampor Tevy got pregnant earlier. Even Pich Pirun himself had never said anything about her pregnancy. Regardless of different rumors about their new daughter, Khmer communities inside and outside of the country are happy to see them reunited and have a new family member.
Pich Pirun is now one of famous Khmer fashion designers. He has his tailoring service shops in Phnom Penh which are considered to be for high class Chum Teav and Ouk Nha. According to his interview by Khiev Sana of CTN, he has been very successful with his fashion design and tailoring services. Ampor Tevy has told various Khmer magazines that she would stay in Cambodia longer this time to be with her family. There is also news about her standing by to play in a new Khmer movie written by Fai Sam Ang in the near future with Yuth Charachany. Cambodians began to see Ampor Tevy slowly emergin in Khmer entertainment again. Though she has not been seen in any new movie recently released, she has appeared in varous TV concerts and events. Ampor Tevy is seen very satisfied and they seem to be a very happy family. Angkorthom.US wishes them the best of luck, happiness and prosperity.
